50mm Bokeh & DOF Test: Panasonic Leica 25mm 1.4 vs Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4

Here's a quick test comparing the bokeh & depth of field of two lens of 50mm equivalent, the Panasonic Leica 25mm f/1.4 lens and the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4 lens.

They are all hand held shots from a Panasonic GF1 and Fujifilm X-Pro1.

Note the limitation of the first test. The subject, the small box of staple bullets, is very small and shot within 2 metres. The background is about 30cm behind the subject.

First off, both bokeh are rendered beautifully.

For the first two photos, there's not so much of a difference between the DOF when the subject is very close to the background. For the last two photos, the subject is moved about 1m away from the background.

The X-Pro1's larger sensor has a slight edge here in terms of shallower depth of field.

  1. Love the Leica bokeh lights in the last one. Seems like very close in all pictures, except for the lovely colour of the lotus rendered by Fuji.

  2. Fuji shines outright on the boats, lotus flower, colour of shirt and gives a much better depth of field.

  3. Really great comparison here. It truly is a subjective thing. I owned the GF1 and 25 1.4 and absolutely loved it. I ended up going with the X-E1 and 35 1.4 because I was looking for something else. After owning and shooting with both, I'd be extremely happy owning either. The Fuji renders images a bit richer/warmer than the Panasonic, but the Panasonic still has this certain look to its images that are truly pleasing. Fuji is doing a wonderful job with their X line, but don't discount Panasonic's offerings as well. That is all.
